iPhone 6 Battery Sizes Tipped; Foxconn Using Robots to Manufacture: Reports

While the tech world is expecting Apple's next generation iPhone to come in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display models, based on the numerous consistent leaks, a whole new set of rumours from China indicates the battery sizes of the two variants.

According to the Chinese website Sohu, the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will pack a battery capacity between 1800mAh and 1900mAh, while the larger 5.5-inch version iPhone 6 (rumoured iPhone Air) will pack a 2500mAh battery.

As the rumour mill is churning out new iPhone 6 leaks on a daily basis, at this point the , even though this rumour is from China where the device is being manufactured. Last week, a report had suggested a new September 15 launch day for the alleged 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models, while retail availability will begin on September 25. It had also claimed that the name of the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will be called the iPhone Air.

Reportedly, China will also be amongst the first countries to receive the iPhone. The report also details the pricing, which matches previous leaks, claiming the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (32GB) will cost CNY 5,288 (roughly Rs. 50,800), while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 (16GB) will be priced at CNY 5,998 (roughly Rs. 57,600).

On Friday, an alleged leaked video was circulated over the internet showcasing the alleged iPhone 6 front panels with curved edges.

The video also compared the front glass panels of the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model sporting thinner bezels to the current iPhone 5s with slightly broad bezels. In the video, the uploader is seen comparing the single hand experience on the iPhone 5s and the unannounced 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

According to another report from Chinese website Ithome, Apple's iPhone manufacturer Foxconn will allegedly use some 10,000 robots named 'Foxbots' into its assembly line process for the iPhone 6 production.

The company is currently in the final testing stages of the robots and each robot will manufacture 30,000 iPhone 6 smartphones, said Hon Hai Group's CEO Terry Gou at the annual shareholders meeting, according to the report. Gou also informed that each 'Foxbot' is dedicated to this project will cost $20,000 to $25,000, and the company has no plans of selling them.

Ancient Egyptians had to pull massive statues and pyramid stones weighing 2.5 tons on large sleds across the desert -- without any modern mechanical device. Now, new research shows how adding a small amount of water to sand significantly reduces the sliding friction -- a clever trick that allowed the Egyptians to cut the number of workers needed by half. 

 

To make a good sandcastle, you don’t use dry sand. By adding water, the grains stick to each other, and your castle holds its shape. Same thing with sand transportation: Adding water reduces the sliding friction of any object moving over the sand. With the right amount of dampness, water droplets bind the sand grains together. 

 

An international team led by Daniel Bonn from the University of Amsterdam tested the sliding friction of dry and wet sand by pulling a weighted sled across the surface in a tray. With dry sand, a heap would form in front of the sled, hindering its movement. And as they added water, both the force needed to pull the sled and the amount of friction decreased. As the water made the sand more rigid, the heaps got smaller and smaller until there was no obstacle forming in front of the moving sled. 

 

Their experiments revealed that the required pulling force decreased proportional to the stiffness of the sand. When water was added, capillary bridges arose; these small water droplets act like glue to bind the sand grains together. With the right amount of water, wet desert sand is about twice as stiff as dry sand, allowing the sled to glide far more easily.

 

“I was very surprised by the amount the pulling force could be reduced -- by as much as 50 percent -- meaning that the Egyptians needed only half the men to pull over wet sand as compared to dry,” Bonn tells the Washington Post. But just like with sandcastles, too much water isn’t good either. Water saturation is accompanied by a decrease in stiffness. With very high water contents, the capillary bridges (which used to act like a glue) start to merge and disappear, and the sliding friction increases again. It’s a delicate balance. "If you use dry sand, it won't work as well, but if the sand is too wet, it won't work either," Bonn tells LiveScience. "There's an optimum stiffness." The ideal amount of water falls between 2 and 5 percent of the volume of sand. 

 

The answer had been staring us in the face for a long time. In a wall painting from the tomb of Djehutihotep (schematic above), you can see a worker pouring water on the sand in front of a sled that’s carrying a colossal statue. The sleds were little more than large wooden planks with upturned edges. “Egyptologists had been interpreting the water as part of a purification ritual," Bonn says, "and had never sought a scientific explanation.” 

 

The work was published in Physical Review Letters last week.

Following Apple AAPL +0.66%‘s announcements earlier this month, Google GOOGL +0.56% will unveil the next big update of its own mobile operating system, Android, at Google I/O – its developer conference that kicks off tomorrow morning in San Francisco.

Android is indeed due for a major update, as the latest one happened over 8 months ago – Android 4.4 (KitKat).

Google’s latest Android “Bubbly” update is likely to be called Bubbly, keeping with the company’s confectionary-based alphabetical naming convention (Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat).

Similar to the way Apple is rolling out iOS 8, Android 5 "Bubbly" will also be available this fall, giving hardware makers enough time to include the mobile operating system in their holiday product lineup.

The Google Nexus 8 is the first Android 64-bit tablet. It will be unveiled at the Google I/O developer conference this week (Source: Android Police).

The major overhaul – at least for end-users – will be visually, as Google has been working on a complete makeover of the user interface across Android, iOS, and the Web (desktop and mobile) – with a flatter design à-la Apple, making it clearer and more consistent.

A total revamp which is the result of a new design framework, code named “Quantum QTM +1.55% Paper,” and similar in spirit to Microsoft's MSFT -0.24% Metro design language in Windows 8 or Bootstrap, a collection of Web UI components.

In addition, Project Hera represents Google’s effort to improve multitasking, enabling users to execute tasks without actually opening that app. An example will be receiving an alert about a new email, opening that email and send a reply, without actually opening Gmail.

Google will also unveil its own health service Google Fit - in direct response to Apple’s HealthKit in iOS 8 – that will collect and use the data from fitness trackers and other connected devices, including devices running Google’s own wearable platform, Android Wear.

A move that the Mountain View, Calif. company hope will create a seamless, better connected and more interactive user experience for all the devices (smart watches, smart home, car) tethered to your smartphone or tablet.

Expect also to see a new version of Google Now, Google’s answer to Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, with support of more services which currently includes sports, public transport, meetings and stocks.

Under the hood, the new OS will finally enable 64-bit processing with support of more RAM – a year after Apple launched the iPhone 5S, the first ever 64-bit smartphone.

Finally, Android 5 will include the much talked about kill switch, as well as improvements in how Android uses power to help improve battery life.

And, if it gets in on time, developers might be able to use as early as this week Android 5 on the upcoming Google Nexus 9, dubbed “Volantis.” Detailed specifications related to this 8.9-inch tablet built by Taiwan-based HTC which integrates Nvidia’s 64-bit Logan processor, were revealed earlier this week by Android Police.

Apple's Big Innovation At WWDC: Letting Apps Talk To Each Other

If the technology community was hoping for new innovations from Apple AAPL +0.66% at its annual WWDC keynote on Monday, they’ll find as much of it in the dull, backend infrastructure to iOS 8 apps as they will in the cool stuff consumers see everyday.

Apple seemed to borrow heavily from other popular services like Dropbox and WhatsApp to enhance the consumer-facing features it had in Mail and iMessage. In fact, WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum sarcastically used the hashtag #innovation when he tweeted today that he was “flattered” to see Apple using so many features that were just like the ones on his service.

Are Apple’s newest features copycat catch-ups?

Two of the most important features:

1) App Extensions – this feature lets apps interact with each other without compromising their users’ security, essentially acting like plug-ins, or “extensions” to other native services. That way when a user installs an app that has an extension, they can interact with the app while running other apps — for instance using a photo editing app within Photos, Apple’s default photo gallery.

2) Widgets – Apple is showing some newfound openness by sharing slices of real estate on native services like the Safari browser and Siri to third-party apps. Today’s demo showed how an app like ESPN could display the latest scores on  the iPhone’s notifications dashboard, while song recognition app Shazam could plug into Siri so that users could buy a song directly through the iPhone’s virtual assistant.

To consumers these might sound like minor tweaks, but developers say they could be the answer to their growing “discovery” problem – where with more than 800,000 apps available for iOS it’s becoming harder and harder to get noticed by customers.

It also feeds into a trend already in play with other tech companies like Facebook and messaging platform Layer, which are creating back-end platforms that work in the background to enable app-to-app communication.Facebook for instance, recently offered tools to app developers like analytics, identifiers and push notifications that allowed them to link with one another.  Rather than be a gateway to these apps, it seems that Facebook wants to become the fabric that binds them.

Apple seems to have a similar strategy in play, while offering apps a greater prospect of scale. “You can create a utility that can be used across the operating system,” said Nick D’Aloisio, who won an Apple design award today for his app, Yahoo YHOO +0.74% News Digest. The service would have come in handy with D’Aloisio’s first app, Trimmit, which automatically summarized text that people were reading in Safari or other apps. “They would have to close that, and opened another app. I was craving this feature for years.” Extensions and widgets were “two new categories here of services that didn’t exist before today,” he added.

It’ll be months before these feature are implemented on iPhone apps, but the result might be more multitasking within apps, and much less closing and re-opening.

This idea of multitasking occurs again with Apple’s new Interactive Notification feature, revealed today. When a user gets a text while in the middle of an iPhone game, they can pull down a tab to reply without closing the game. “You don’t have to leave the app,” said Apple’s software VP Craig Federighi, who demonstrated on Monday how users could also “like” a Facebook notification from within an app.

Extensions and widgets could give apps more exposure to more people, but it’s unclear how developers would make money from what are essentially plug-ins to other apps and Apple services. There’s likely no cut of ad revenue for Apple to share since it doesn’t show ads in native services like Photos or Siri.

Apple may simply argue that greater exposure through extensions will translate to more downloads if a service is good enough.

Samsung Galaxy S6 / SVI Coming up in January 2015

Samsung came up with their Galaxy S5 smartphone earlier this year and it has been quite successful too. However, rumor has it that the Korean brand, known for manufacturing some of the world’s greatest and most popular smartphone devices, is currently working on the S6.

Detailed reports of this smartphone and its capabilities are yet to be ascertained, even as fans around the globe have made sure that their demands are heard. Some of the most popular demands made by fans include a processor capable of tackling problems quickly and with greater efficiency, better battery life, crispier screen resolution and curved & flexible display.

The overall plastic build quality of the S5 should not be carried forward to the Samsung Galaxy S6, while we hope that the use of Graphene or Silicon is considered this time around. Samsung’s battery life has been under the scanner for quite a while too and they need to make some serious upgrades here, in order to retain customers.

While the design idea behind their S5 was simple and clean, the Samsung Galaxy S6 should feature a larger screen, packed with higher resolution. We are expecting a 5.5 inch screen, packed with 441 ppi and 1080 pixel density. These figures however, are not official.
If you are from Canada or USA, you should expect this smartphone to be available at a store near you in January. If you are from China, Pakistan, UK, etc, you should get this device by February at most. Experts believe that this smartphone will be priced around $789, although, we cannot vouch for this figure right now.

iOS 8 Beta 3 release date next week - July 8; Apple rolls out iOS 7.1.2

The iOS 8 Beta 3 is set to arrive in developers' hands on July 8, according to reports.

Apple is set to release the third beta version of the new iOS 8 next week. The two previous beta versions were released on June 2 and 17, respectively. Reports added that the upcoming beta version will be the final beta update of the mobile software before it will release the official version of the iOS in the fall.

iOS 8 Beta 3 includes updates and fixes from the previous version. The beta versions are meant for developers to develop or update their apps to run smoothly to the new iOS.

Apple provided a preview of the new iOS 8 last month at the Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC) and the new OS is bound to arrive in the fall.

Some of the software features included in the new iOS are updates to the photos, iMessage and the keyboard applications. The search function, Spotlight, and iCloud will also be improved. iOS 8 will also pack the much awaited Health application to manage the health information of the user such as heart monitor, BMI and track medications.

However, there are some users who were itching to run their devices to the new OS, which is not advisable since the OS is still in testing stage and users may come across bugs and issues that may cause the breakdown of their devices, especially if they are not tech savvy to save their units.

Meanwhile, Apple is currently rolling out the iOS 7.1.2, which brings bug fixes and security updates. The software update also fix issues on iBeacon connectivity and stability, data transfer for some 3rd party accessories, including bar code scanners, and data protection class of Mail attachments.

With most of the Android big-hitters out of the way the path is clear for Apple’s iPhone 6 to stomp all over the latter part of the year.

A new iPhone always generates a tremendous amount of excitement but this time around it looks like Apple could be making a lot of changes, making it more exciting and intriguing than ever. At this stage it’s all rumour of course, so nothing’s set in stone, but there’s a whole lot to go on and most of it sounds very promising indeed.

Release date and price

The last few iPhone’s have all been launched in September and there’s no reason to think that the new one will be any different, but if you want evidence then how about the fact that according toifun.de German Apple store employees are having limitations put on their holiday time in September, which certainly suggests a big launch of some kind.

As for the price there’s no word on that yet, but given that the RRP for the iPhone 5S starts at £549 we’d be surprised if it’s any cheaper than that. In fact it may well be more expensive, if rumours about some of the changes such as the increased screen size turn out to be true, but we’d be surprised if Apple let the starting price go above £600.

Display

One of the biggest changes we’re expecting to see in the iPhone 6 is a larger screen. So far Apple has kept the screens on the small side, with the iPhone 5S coming in at just 4 inches. That suits a lot of people fine but the wider smartphone market is finding great success in larger screen sizes and Apple seems to want to get in on that.

It’s rumoured that the new handset may in fact come in at two different size points. There’ll be the main iPhone 6 which is thought to have a 4.7 inch display and then there may also be a phablet sized device with either a 5.5 or 5.7 inch screen. Just about every leak regarding the iPhone 6 has pointed to a larger screen, so we’re almost certain that we’ll see one.

With increased size we’re also expecting an increased resolution. Exactly what resolution that will be isn’t known for sure but we’ve also heard that Apple has been testing a 1704 x 960 display, which would allow the device to keep the same aspect ratio while increasing the resolution.

That’s still not quite full HD, but on a 4.7 inch iPhone it will lead to a pixel density of 416 pixels per inch, while the 5.5 inch phablet would be looking at 355 pixels per inch, both of which are higher than the current 326ppi retina display standard.

So the iPhone 6 screen will probably be bigger and higher resolution, but it may also be a lot stronger. Apple has bought up vast quantities of Sapphire Crystal glass, a material which is far stronger than the glass currently used in phone screens. However it’s also a lot more expensive, so we’re not entirely convinced it will be used for screens as big as the iPhone 6 one, because doing so would likely drive the price way up. Our money is on it being used for the iWatch instead, but you never know.

Design

Given that the iPhone 6 will likely have a bigger screen than its predecessor it’s logical to assume that it will also have a bigger body. The exact dimensions aren’t known, but a design schematic leaked to Macotakara suggests that it will be 66m wide (the iPhone 5S is 58.6mm wide). However it also claims that the iPhone 6 will be just 7mm thick, making it slimmer than the 7.6mm iPhone 5S.

As well as being super slim it’s thought that the iPhone 6 will have a curved design, more in line with the 3GS than the 5S.

Power

The iPhone 5S has a dual-core Apple A7 processor, so we’re expecting the iPhone 6 to have an A8 processor. The number of cores may go up as well, with rumours suggesting we could be in for a quad-core handset.

However whether dual or quad-core it’s thought that Apple will be more focussed on providing efficiency in order to improve the battery life than on delivering massive performance boosts.

Little has been said about the RAM. The iPhone 5S only has 1GB so we’d be surprised if the iPhone 6 has more than 2GB and there may be no increase at all given that the 5S doesn’t seem to have any problems running well on that little RAM. But even if it does stick with 1GB it might be faster, as industry watcher Matt Margolis reckons that Apple is going to switch to faster LPDDR4 DRAM.

Camera

There have been various conflicting rumours surrounding the iPhone 6’s camera. We’ve heard talk of a 13 megapixel sensor but the most prevalent rumours point to Apple sticking with an 8 megapixel one.

That doesn’t mean the camera won’t be getting better though. There have been reports that Apple will be both upping the pixel size, to allow more light in and including Electronic Image Stabilisation, to minimise the effects of camera shake. So expect a refined but not revolutionised camera.

Features

The iPhone 6 is obviously going to run iOS 8, especially now that the software has been announced and it’s also a safe bet that it will come with Touch ID and a motion co-processor just like the iPhone 5S.

But we might see some new features too. It’s unlikely that any of these will be as substantial as the aforementioned ones, but it looks like the iPhone 6 might include NFC as various sources suggest as much.

It’s also possible that the iPhone 6 might support wireless charging, as Apple has filed a patent regarding the technology. This is less likely though as Apple files all sorts of patents and they often don’t turn into anything.

The iPhone 6, which will launch next fall, will contain several highly-anticipated features, including near field communication (NFC), wireless charging, a better 4G antenna, & a much bigger screen, a source close to the situation tells VentureBeat.

The new iPhone is nearing completion and is now being tested for things like durability, speed, and network performance.

The phone will run the impressive new iOS 8 operating system that Apple announced at its developers conference earlier this week.

NFC, finally

Apple was ready to include an near field communication (NFC) radio in the last round of iPhones, but the company pulled the plug on the feature because the nascent mobile payments ecosystem was too stratified and immature.

Apple is now ready to pull the trigger on NFC. An NFC radio has been designed into the iPhone 6 and will enable mobile payments in the way that Android phones using Google Wallet already do.

We’re unclear if Apple has aligned itself with the ISIS wireless payments standard, which is backed by a consortium of credit card companies and banks. It is more likely that Apple will go with its own mobile payments standard, which will compete with both ISIS and Google Wallet.

This may confuse things in mobile payments further, because merchants will likely want to wait until one wireless payments standard becomes dominant so that they’ll have to switch out their point-of-sales systems only once.

Faster LTE radio

The current iPhone 5 series contains a Category 4 LTE radio, which is capable of connection speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (mbps). The new iPhone 6 will contain a much faster Category 6 LTE radio, which is capable of 300 mbps throughput speeds, our source says.

The new radio is not yet an LTE Advanced radio, but it is considered an interim step toward that new frontier in wireless.  LTE Advanced provides almost 3.3 gigabits per second peak download rates under ideal lab conditions.

Wireless charging

Ideally, we would be able to set our phone down on any charging surface we encounter to get a charge. But the device world is now split along the lines of competing standards. This has made device makers hesitate to commit to one standard or the other.

This situation improved a little bit earlier this year when two of the main standards, the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), agreed to make sure that if a device works on one, it’ll work on the other, too.

Apple is apparently ready to commit to a standard. Which standard that is remains unknown, but the new iPhone 6 design includes a surface under the shell which connects to an inductive charging surface for energy transfer, our source revealed. These charging surfaces can live on a free standing pad, but are more often built into preexisting fixtures like countertops and dashboard trays.

The iPhone 6 will also include a significantly larger screen that will take up relatively more area on the front of the phone, our source says. The hardware border around the screen will be smaller than on previous iPhones.

Apple was been under pressure to increase the size of its screens in response to consumers’ desire to watch more video on mobile devices. Competing Android phones will large screens have sold well, and Apple can no longer ignore that, our source says.

According to a new report from market research firm Canalys, slightly more than a third of all smartphones sold worldwide in first quarter had five-inch and larger screens. For smartphones with an unlocked price of US $500 or more, 5-inch+ screens represented nearly half of devices.

Some observers have predicted a new iPhone display with a pixel-tripling (3X) mode.

This would triple the “base resolution” of 568 x 320 (1,136 x 640 is twice this), resulting in a 1,704 x 960 resolution for the Apple iPhone 6. This would essentially increase the current resolution of 1,136 x 640 by 150 percent, and would keep the same 16:9 screen ratio found on the iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c.

On a possible 4.7-inch screen, the ppi would be 416; on a 5.5-inch, 356 ppi. The iPhone 5s and 5c have 4-inch screens; the 4s’ resolution is 3.5-inches.

The new screen will also likely get a new scratch-resistant covering.

Nothing’s final until launch

Our source warns that while these features are part of the iPhone 6 design now, Apple has in the past removed major device features at the last minute before debut. The NFC radio in the new iPhone 6, for example, might be at risk of being zapped by Apple at the last minute if it decides the mobile payments ecosystem is still not ready.
